Travel Tips for Nerja, Spain

COST: € (AFFORDABLE)

SAFETY: 4/5 FOR SOLO FEMALE TRAVELLERS

Nerja is a seaside town along Spain’s Costa del Sol, that blends Mediterranean beauty with Andalusian charm. It has a mix of sandy beaches, whitewashed streets, and a relaxed atmosphere. It makes for a perfect short escape, whether you’re travelling solo, as a couple or with friends. I visited in May, when the days were sunny and warm (mid-20s degrees Celsius), and it felt like an ideal time. It was lively but not overcrowded, with a safe and welcoming vibe.

HOW TO GET THERE

From Ireland, the easiest route is to fly into Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport, which is well connected to Dublin, Cork and Shannon. The flight time is about 3 hours.

I was already in Málaga, so I travelled from there and the journey was about 50 minutes by car or 1–1.5 hours by bus. If you don’t want to rent a car, ALSA buses run directly from Málaga Airport or Málaga city centre to Nerja at reasonable prices, and the journey itself is scenic.

LANGUAGE, CURRENCY & WEATHER

Spanish is the official language, but English is widely understood in tourist areas. Learning a few basic phrases like ‘hola’, ‘gracias’ and ‘por favor’ goes a long way.

The Euro is used, and card payments are accepted almost everywhere, though it’s handy to carry a little cash for small tapas bars.

May offered me sunny weather with higher temperatures (mid-20s). It was perfect for exploring and beach time without the intense summer heat. Spring and early autumn are equally pleasant, while July and August can be very hot and busier.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Nerja is a walkable town and most sights, beaches and restaurants are easily reached on foot. If you want to travel further, then regional buses are available from the main station. They link Nerja to Málaga and other coastal towns. Local buses connect Nerja to nearby villages like Frigiliana. Taxis are available but pricier, and you usually won’t need them unless you are carrying luggage.

WHERE TO STAY

For a short stay of two to four nights, Nerja offers plenty of options. Stay in the Old Town, near the Balcón de Europa for easy access to restaurants, shops and beaches. The Burriana Beach area is great if you want to roll straight out of your accommodation and onto the sand.

Since the town feels safe overall, it’s a good destination for solo travellers, though like anywhere, it’s wise not to stay out very late if you’re alone.

WHERE TO GO & WHAT TO DO

Even with just three days, you can fit in the highlights! Why not just wander the streets. Nerja’s narrow alleys and tiled squares are ideal for slow exploration.

Visit the Balcón de Europa. This is the town’s most famous viewpoint, offering sweeping sea and mountain views. Visit in the morning or evening for the best light and a quieter atmosphere.

In terms of beaches, Burriana Beach is lively, spacious and full of beach bars. Calahonda Beach is small and pretty, right below the Balcón. Maro Beach is a bit further out, it’s quieter and more natural.

Travel to the Nerja Caves (Cuevas de Nerja), you won’t be disappointed. This is an underground wonder with massive stalactites and prehistoric paintings, and it’s just a short bus ride or drive from town.

If you are looking for a day trip, try Frigiliana. This is a gorgeous whitewashed village only 15 minutes away.

WHAT & WHERE TO EAT

Nerja’s food scene is a mix of laid-back tapas culture with fresh Mediterranean flavours. For less touristy and more authentic vibes, travel off the main squares into side streets for family-run taverns.

If you are a solo traveller who wants to snack rather than sit down for a big meal, then try one of the many tapas bars. They still serve a free tapa with your drink.

If seafood is your thing, try espeto de sardinas (sardines grilled on skewers over an open fire), especially along the beachfront.

The most famous spot for paella is Ayo’s on Burriana Beach, where giant pans of paella are cooked outdoors and served generously.

Nerja is the kind of place that lingers with you. Sun-soaked, welcoming and just the right mix of relaxation and adventure Buen viaje!
