The more time I spend travelling, the more I experience the horrifically annoying behaviours of humans.
Arguing over the weight of a check-in bag, being disorganised at security, impatience when boarding the plane or making nasty comments about fellow passengers or airline staff; I’ve witnessed it all.
Yes, airports can be stressful, especially when you’re dealing with long lines, delays and crowds. But, a little courtesy goes a long way in making the experience smoother for everyone.
So, whether you are a frequent flyer or an occasional traveller, here’s my helpful guide to the key dos and don’ts of airport etiquette.
DO: Be Prepared at Security
Keep your ID and boarding pass handy and ready to go so you’re not holding up the line. Empty your pockets early. Don’t wait until you’re at the security scanner to fumble through coins, keys or phones. Know the rules! When required put your liquids in a clear bag, take your laptop out of its case and take your shoes off. Being prepared speeds things up for everyone.
DON’T: Block Walkways or Escalators
Stand to the side if you’re not walking. This is especially the case on moving walkways and escalators. Always leave room for others to pass you! And don’t gather around gates or doors unless the boarding is announced.
DO: Respect Personal Space
Give people room in queues, lounges and at baggage claim. Use your headphones when you are listening to music or watching videos. No one wants to hear your music in the terminal…
DON’T: Hog the Overhead Bin
Store your large carry-on bag in the overhead bin and put your small items under your seat. If there is limited space, don’t put your coats or other small bags in the overhead. Don’t move other people’s belongings to make room for your own unless it’s absolutely necessary (and always ask first).
DO: Follow Boarding Procedures
When boarding the plane, wait for your group or row to be called. Crowding the gate doesn’t get you on the plane faster and it just creates stress for staff and other passengers. Have your boarding pass ready for scanning, instead of searching for it when you make it to the front of the line.
DON’T: Be Rude to Airline Staff
Flight delays, weather issues or cancellations are often outside of their control. Politeness goes a long way. This is especially the case if you need help rebooking or resolving an issue.
DO: Pack Your Patience
Airports are busy, unpredictable places. Give yourself extra time, especially if you are travelling internationally. Be kind to other travellers. We are all in the same boat!
DON’T: Crowd the Baggage Carousel
When waiting, stand a few feet back so everyone can see and access their bags. When you see your luggage, grab it and step aside quickly to avoid a traffic jam.
DO: Purchase an airtag
This will help you keep track of your belongings. You can attach it to keys, a wallet, a backpack or even a pet’s collar. It uses Apple’s Find My network to locate lost items. Look at this TikTok video of how an AirTag truly works!
Good airport etiquette isn’t just about rules, it’s about creating a smoother experience for everyone. By being thoughtful and patient, you’ll not only reduce your own stress but also make the journey more pleasant for everyone around you. Safe travels!
